Round Robin Female Tournament - 2006
All teams participated with enthusiasm and with the intention to capture the gold medal position to receive the prized "Iceberg Cup" trophy. All activities were well organized and the round-robin schedule all planned out on paper. But even hockey seems to be like life; full of surprises.
During the third game the zamboni broke down. This lead to its first challenge. There was a scramble to locate sufficient wide snow shovels. This was handled quickly, and the ice was cleared the old-fashioned way, using some able-bodied volunteers to manually clear the ice. The scene of a long row of snow shovels parading down the ice brought back vivid memories. The spirit of the competition was in no way dampened. However, for safety reasons, the two championship games scheduled for the following day were canceled.
Determining the winners was no doubt a bit unusual. Typically, to be a silver medal winner a team would lose to the gold place finisher. However, in this case, the two teams with second and third place points played off for the silver medal.
Gander was declared the gold medal winner of the tournament because of their two wins and one tie. Twillingate had one win, one tie, and one loss and were declared the silver medal winner. Clarenville came away with the bronze medal with one win and two losses. Glovertown ended up with two ties and one loss.
