Official Puck Drop
Mr. George Stockley was
present to perform the official puck drop. It was very fitting to have on hand, the
father of the man who orgainzed this tournament, and also viewed as one of the fathers
(founders) of a local organized hockey venue.
He was involved in Twillingate's first outdoor rink, which was constructed on Kiar's Pond in 1956, under the leadership of Mr. George Hawkins. Those same rink boards were brought to the current site of the George Hawkins Memorial Arena in the early sixties.
A Twillingate committee purchased a world war 2 airport hanger from the American base in Gander, Newfoundland, for the price of $1.00. The hanger was dismantled, brought to Twillingate, and then reconstructed over the outdoor rink.
Mr. Stockley, a noted soccer player of his generation, was escorted on the ice by his two granddaughters, Kylee and Cecily, for the official puck dropping ceremony.
